Personality: Fashion diva, likes to keep up with the trends, a bit of sass with her girlie-girlness, tends to get distracted by sparkly things. Also is somewhat a pack rat and likes to collect things.

History: She was found floating along a river by Caleb and his daughter, Luna, while they were out fishing. She seemed to have suffered from some sort of trauma and was in and out of consciousness for awhile. Despite that she looked like a normal little girl, Caleb was able to tell that she wasn't human. For awhile they weren't able to determine what she was exactly, until Ariana discovered she was a mermaid when she walked in on her while bathing.
She's from a noble family, and apparently she had "swam" away from home. She wouldn't go into much details as to why she did so, but only says that she doesn't want to go back and asks if they would take her in for awhile. So after some discussion, it was decided to allow her to stay.
Later on, when on vacation with the family, she and Dyani went along the beach to collect random things. Dyani was collecting shells and Nerissa was looking for sparkly things that people tend to drop in the water. This was were she got caught in a trap set up by Miyako. She had heard of Miyako's kind amongst her asian counterparts before and was fearful of being eaten.

About the race/clan:
There are many myths and legends about mermaids throughout various cultures and history. Nerissa's people were originally a rare type of marine mammal that does not currently exist in their original form, therefore considered extinct. They were about the size of the small beluga whales and they came in all sorts of colors. They were playful and are like "pack rats" that liked to collect and store random things, which varies from each individual, but they were also shy of strangers and kept to themselves. Many things they tend to collect or treasure were considered useless or junk to most others, with every so often some collecting valuables.
Poseidon had charged her ancestors to secretly guard and watch over a precious relic, for which they did guard it faithfully for many centuries. Because they were not very aggressive nor considered the ideal guardians at first, most wouldn't consider them actually guarding anything. One technique they did have that helped, was the ability to hide things they gather very well. You'd have to be extremely observant of them to even guess where they hide their treasures.
When the time came for Poseidon to retrieve his relic, he rewarded her people the ability to shapeshift into humans, allowing them to access the lands and blend in with the locals. Eventually over time their fish forms began to alter and their basic form became more like the mermaids of legends. Although they are considered a type of mermaid, in actuality they aren't related to true merfolks.
